JUNIOR MATHEMATICAL SOCIETY MISKOLC
BORSOD DIVISION OF THE JÁNOS BOLYAI MATHEMATICAL SOCIETY
Announce the
MATHEMATICAL CAMP AND JUNIOR MATHEMATICAL CONFERENCE '99
M I S K O L C
August 15-22. , 1999
The Junior Mathematical Society Miskolc and the Borsod Division of János Bolyai Mathematical Society will organize the Mathematical Camp and Junior Mathematical Conference '99 for high school aged or near students in cooperation with the Mathematical Institute of Miskolc University, Herman Ottó Grammar School and Földes Ferenc Grammar School.
The organizers of the Junior Mathematical Congress '96 Miskolc, (official satellite conference of the 2nd European Congress of Mathematics - Budapest) wish to fill in the gaps between the edition '96 of the JMC, and the edition 1998 held in Potsdam and the edition 2000 planned around the 3rd European Congress of Mathematics in Barcelona.
We planned to organize every odd year, for the first time in 1997, a meeting, a mathematical camp and conference. Continuing the tradition we wish to organize this year, 1999 a similar conference, based on the experience of the previous editions, and the resulting international co-operation.
Location
The city of Miskolc is in the North-East of Hungary, about 100
miles from Budapest.
From the capital one can reach it in less than 2 hours by rail.
There are regular intercity trains, every three hours, starting
at 7.00 in the morning from railway station KELETI PU Budapest.
By car one can take the motor road M3, and the highway 3.
There is possible to reach it from other directions as Debrecen,
Nyiregyháza, Kosice (Slovakia), Cop (Ukraine) by rail or car as
well.
About the programme
The official languages of the camp and the conference are English and Hungarian, all Hungarian lectures will be translated into English.
The participants of the Mathematical Camp and Junior Mathematical Conference will be high school aged students interested in Mathematics, students participating in national and international mathematical competitions, future mathematicians and their teachers.
The invited speakers - famous mathematicians from Europe - will give one hour lectures in English, and will offer seminars for thoseinterested in order to deepen the given subject. We plan other, problem oriented seminars as well. The main lectures are planned on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning, the seminars in the same afternoons except the last day.
During the conference there will be organized some small
(20-30 people) working groups in order to deepen the study of
different aspects of Mathematics.
We plan student presentations -talks, computer or software
presentations- on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and
Friday.
On Thursday afternoon we plan to commemorate professor Paul Erdős.
This meeting will provide an excellent opportunity for the participants to make friends and to create the base of future professional collaboration. The social programme contains: sightseeing (Sunday afternoon) welcome party (Monday evening),a trip to Eger and the Bükk mountains (Wednesday), to visit the famous castle, folk dance evening (Thursday) and farewell disco (Friday night).
If case of sufficient number of participants we plan to organize an extra one and a half day trip to visit the castles in the Zemplen mountains and Tokaj on August 21-22 ( Saturday and Sunday).
Contributions
Apart from attending lectures by scholars, the participants may themselves give talks, present computer programs or exhibit posters, each participant will be given the chance to present his results.
The papers of the participants will be published in English and Hungarian special editions of the mathematical journal Pi, and we will make up a volume of Abstracts for all contributors.
In order for us to edit the English and Hungarian special edition of the Mathematical journal PI and a VOLUME of ABSTRACTS participants are asked to submit with their COMPLETE (preferable English language) paper (5-8 pages), an extra one-page ABSTRACT in ENGLISH.
The ABSTRACT should contain the title, the author's name, the author's school (place of work) and address, a summary of the contribution and the bibliography used.
The COMPLETE papers (with the same structure) should be written if possible in TEX format or any other edited, ready-to-print form, and apart from TWO COPIES of the PAPER and the ABSTRACT sent by mail, we welcome files sent on e-mail or floppy disks too. If such an edited form is not available the paper and the abstract should be submitted as early as possible is, before the DEADLINE OF JUNE 30, to allow us the time for their editing.
DO NOT send mathematical software or posters, but only give their description, number of poster pages, and their dimension on the REGISTRATION FORM (for posters the recommanded size is up to A/0, equivalent to 16 times a normal page).
Costs of participation
The participants have to pay USD 120 for the complete programme (if transferred before June 30). The above sum includes the participation fee, the student type (3-5 bed bedrooms) accommodation for 6 nights ( Sunday, August 15 to Friday, August 20), the breakfast, lunch and dinner for 6 days, ( first dinner on Sunday, August 15, last lunch on Saturday, August 21), the costs of the trip to Eger on Wednesday August 18, local transport, handouts.
An extra night + breakfast if requested, will cost USD 10.
Optional programme
